Finishing Powder

The optical performance of a setting powder is determined entirely by the physical geometry of its particles, specifically their size, shape, and refractive index relative to the wavelength of visible light. A powder that scatters light diffusely across multiple angles creates a soft-focus blurring effect at the skin surface. A powder that reflects light specularly in a single direction adds radiance. The difference between a powder that flatters and one that flattens is a formulation decision, not a shade selection.¹

The Opuliss Finishing Powder is built on mica, nylon-12, and boron nitride. Boron nitride is a synthetic mineral with a hexagonal platelet crystal structure whose geometry produces diffuse light scattering rather than directional reflection, creating the soft-focus blurring effect that mica alone cannot deliver.² Nylon-12 microspheres provide surface smoothness and sebum absorption without the white-cast risk that talc produces on medium to deep skin tones, which is why nylon-12 has progressively replaced talc as the functional base in prestige powder formulations. Bismuth oxychloride contributes a fine pearlescent sheen and improved adhesion to the skin surface. Diisostearyl malate and pentaerythrityl tetraisostearate are branched-chain esters that bind the pressed powder matrix without compressing or disrupting the light-scattering particle dispersion that drives finish quality. Tocopheryl acetate stabilizes the lipid binder components against oxidative degradation across the product's shelf life.³
