What is the downside of ginkgo biloba?
On skin, the downside to know about is the risk of an allergic reaction. The plant contains ginkgolic acid, which is known to trigger allergic skin reactions, so the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety asks manufacturers to keep plant constituents below levels that could sensitise. The panel's published safety assessment (2024) judges Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, the form in this gel, safe as currently used in cosmetics when formulated to be non-sensitising. In a four-week study, a 5% niacinamide moisturiser reduced the look of dark spots more than the same moisturiser without niacinamide, and in lab models niacinamide limited the transfer of pigment to skin cells2. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, a 2% niacinamide moisturiser lowered facial sebum over four weeks3. Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract contributes flavonoid and terpene-lactone antioxidant activity. A topical Ginkgo biloba leaf preparation showed free-radical scavenging activity in a human-volunteer cosmeceutical evaluation1.
