Finding Your Undertone on Deep Skin When the Vein Test Fails

On deep skin, find your undertone from the colour of the skin itself and from how past foundations behaved, not from the veins at your wrist. Veins are harder to see through deeper skin, and the colour they do show is set by optics rather than by undertone. Undertone is the balance of red and yellow in the skin at a given depth. Every shade of Opuliss foundation, powder foundation and concealer carries a depth and an undertone on its page, and at the deep end the undertone labels show where the range stops as clearly as what it holds.

Why the vein test runs out of evidence

The vein test asks whether the veins at your inner wrist look blue, read as cool, or green, read as warm. The trouble is that a vein's colour is not a pigment you could match. Kienle and colleagues (1996) showed that the colour a blood vessel shows through skin is decided by how skin scatters and absorbs light at each wavelength, how oxygenated the blood is, how wide and how deep the vessel sits, and how the eye processes what reaches it. A nursing study of arm veins (Mukai 2020) found that visibility turned on vein depth, the skin's own yellowness value and sex. Engineers designing near-infrared vein imaging systems list dark skin tone among the reasons a vein may not be visible by eye (Shahzad 2014). A test that depends on seeing the vein has little to read when the vein does not show.

What undertone means in colour terms

Colour scientists describe skin in a space called CIELAB. Ly and colleagues (2020) set out its three axes: L for lightness, a for red against green, and b* for yellow against blue. Depth, the difference between a medium and a deep shade, sits mostly on the lightness axis. Undertone is the balance of red and yellow at a given depth. In makeup shorthand, warm leans yellow or golden, cool leans pink or rosy, and neutral holds the two in balance. Olive and red are sometimes named as undertones of their own. None of this is a matter of taste. Branigan and colleagues (2024) captured skin with CIELAB readings and a two-dimensional colour scale, and found that red and yellow undertones were perceived consistently. Undertone can be read from the skin directly. It does not need a vein to stand in for it.

Your face is not your wrist

Where you look matters as much as how. Xiao and colleagues (2017) measured skin colour on the forehead, the cheek, the inner arm and the back of the hand. Redness varied most by body site, highest on the forehead and lowest on the inner arm, while the differences between the groups studied ran mostly along yellowness. The wrist itself was not measured, and the gap between arm and forehead is the point: redness is not one reading you can take anywhere and carry to your face. That study covered Caucasian, Chinese, Kurdish and Thai participants, none of African descent, so read it as a pattern rather than a measurement of your face. Caisey and colleagues (2006) measured women of several backgrounds, African-American women among them, and found one continuous colour space with wide variety inside every group. So read undertone where foundation will actually sit, along the jaw and the cheek.

The record you already hold

Every foundation you have worn is a test already run, across many days and many rooms. Caisey's team found that women's own sense of their skin colour agreed fairly well with instrument readings in most of the groups studied. You know more than the vein test tells you. Read your record by the direction of the miss. A base that turned orange read warmer than you at that depth. One that looked grey or ashy sat too light for it. One that read pink sat cooler than you. The direction of the miss is the signal. Which pigment produced it is a different question. One caution: Yolanda and colleagues (2025) measured liquid foundations on a test chart over time, and how the colour shifted depended on the shade's lightness. Separate a shade that was wrong at the first stroke from one that changed through the day.

Why no single read settles it

A vein, an app and a mirror are all instruments, and instruments disagree. Sooriyaarachchi and colleagues (2026) measured forehead skin tone with visual scales, a printed shade guide and two colour-measuring devices. The methods broadly correlated, yet the two devices disagreed on a skin tone score called the individual typology angle, and the authors noted there is no agreed ground truth to settle it. Their advice was to use more than one method side by side. The same logic holds at home. Put the vein test, any camera read and your own record together, and when they disagree, the record is the one gathered on your own face. Many of the tools in use were first calibrated on a narrow range of skin, a history set out in why universal shades are not.

What decides how a shade reads

The shade lives in the pigment, not the base. The ingredient lists for Velvet Espresso Foundation and Brunette Foundation match line for line, and their may-contain panels name the same pigments in the same order: titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, red iron oxide, black iron oxide and chromium oxide green. What separates a deep neutral from a medium-deep neutral-to-cool is the ratio between those pigments, and no ingredient list states a ratio. That is why the label carries the weight here. What the product page does state is a sentence naming the shade's depth and its undertone, and the second half of that sentence is the undertone the vein test was trying to give you.

What the range holds at the deep end

Each product page states a depth and an undertone. Velvet Espresso Foundation is labelled a deep shade with neutral undertones, in a dewy finish. Brunette Foundation is labelled medium-deep and neutral-to-cool, the coolest label at that depth. Cafe Full Coverage Foundation is labelled medium-deep and warm-neutral, in a soft-focus matte. Walnut Powder Foundation is labelled a deep shade with neutral undertones, swept on dry or pressed on damp. Across every liquid shade labelled medium-deep or deep, the undertones run warm, warm-neutral, neutral and neutral-to-cool. Read each label as a description of the pigment in the bottle, not as a match for any one face. The label gives the direction. Your record tells you whether that direction is yours.

Where the range stops

At medium-deep and deep, no liquid shade is labelled cool, and none is labelled red. Olive appears only on medium shades. If your record points to a cool or a red undertone at depth, this range does not carry a shade labelled for it, and the honest move is to read the nearest neutral label and decide whether that gap is one you can live with rather than to buy on hope. Where the powder foundations and the concealers stop by depth is the shade map's subject rather than this page's, since undertone is the question here. Deep shades have been the thin end of complexion ranges for a long time, a history traced in how many shades is enough. Knowing where a range stops saves the cost of a shade that only nearly fits.
