A brush is half the result, and it is the half almost nobody maintains. The formula gets the attention, the shade gets the debate, and the thing actually putting colour on your face sits in a drawer for months. Two published studies put numbers to what that costs, and the numbers are worth knowing before the next purchase.
What a drawer actually holds
Researchers at Aston University collected used cosmetics from consumers and cultured what was on them. Across lipsticks, lip glosses, eyeliners, mascaras and beauty blenders, between 79 and 90 percent carried bacteria. The organisms identified included Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Citrobacter freundii. Fungi turned up in every product category tested. The authors' conclusion was measured and blunt at the same time: contamination happens during ordinary use, and the level they found points to a gap in awareness rather than a failure of manufacturing. Nothing here is about a product being badly made. It is about what happens to any applicator after it meets skin, a bathroom surface, and a few months of being reached for without a thought.
The sponge is a different object
One category separated itself from the rest. Beauty blenders carried the highest bacterial load of anything tested, with Enterobacteriaceae present in 26.58 percent and fungi in 56.96 percent of them. Two behavioural figures explain most of it. Ninety-three percent of the blenders donated had never been cleaned. Sixty-four percent had been dropped on the floor and kept in use anyway. A damp open-cell sponge is simply a better home than a dry brush, and it is stored in the most humid room in the house. That is not an argument against sponges, which do things a brush cannot. It is an argument that a sponge and a brush are not the same object and should not share a maintenance habit.
What actually cleans them
A separate team compared cleaning methods on natural brushes, synthetic brushes and sponges, counting colonies before and after. Against water alone, bactericidal soap took a natural brush from 418 colonies to 83, a synthetic brush from 1,162 to 9, and a sponge from 617 to 3. Seventy percent ethanol eliminated 100 percent of bacterial growth in their tests. Their other finding is the practical one: disinfection worked better on applicators used for dry products than for wet ones, so the tools that need cleaning most are the hardest to clean. Soap and warm water, worked through properly and dried flat, is doing real work. Reaching for it more often matters more than reaching for something stronger.
A brush is chosen for a job
Cleaning is only half of maintenance. The other half is owning tools that suit what you actually do, because a brush used for the wrong job is worked harder, loaded heavier and cleaned less. A practice, kept small
None of this needs a ritual. It needs a cadence. Wash anything that touches a wet or cream product weekly, because that is the category the research found hardest to disinfect. Wash dry-product brushes every two to three weeks. Dry everything flat, never upright, so water does not run into the ferrule and loosen the glue.
