Our Skin Tells Stories

Skin keeps a record. The research mostly has not. Deep skin tones tell their stories in marks that linger, in tone that shifts with every season of a life, and in a clinical literature that only recently started writing any of it down. This piece is about that second story, the one told by who was counted.

The record the skin keeps

A mark on deeper skin is rarely just a moment. The marks acne leaves behind are the clearest example, and the clinical literature on treating them carries a gap it now names itself. A 2025 scoping review of treatments for acne-induced dark marks put it directly: "Despite the significant physical, emotional, and social harm caused by AMH, many clinical trials either fail to report FST data or do not include patients with FST V to VI". 1 The condition lands hardest on the deepest skin types, and the trials meant to answer it often did not enrol them.

The record the research kept

The pattern is wider than one condition. A 2023 analysis of dermatology clinical trials found that "Black/African Americans were most underrepresented and underrepresented even when accounting for prevalence rates". 2 Even adjusting for how common each condition is, the gap stands.

Cosmetic dermatology keeps the thinnest record of all. A review of the field's literature from 2018 to 2023 reported: "Of 5,175 screened articles, 561 (10.84%) met inclusion criteria, and 214 (4.14%) provided FST data." 3 Roughly one screened article in twenty-four says what skin tones it studied. When a brand tells you a result applies to you, this is the question that matters: was anyone like you in the room when the number was made?

What a brand does about a thin record

Opuliss reads at the source and says so. Every efficacy claim on this store traces to a named study, every ingredient is published by its full name, and where the evidence has not included the deepest skin tones, the honest sentence is that it has not. The fuller reading lives on the melanin rich skin hub, where the trials, the scales, and the gaps are walked through paper by paper.

Fresh, in the meantime

None of that asks you to wait to look like yourself. Freshness is the daily story your skin tells while the record catches up.

The wider shelf lives in the skincare collection, foundation, lips, and Opuliss Men.
