The Power of Consistency

Consistency is the least glamorous idea in skincare, and the best evidenced. Across the published record on pigmentation in deeper skin tones, the interventions that hold up are not dramatic. They are daily. This piece reads that record honestly: what the research actually rewards, why the habit is the hard part, and where Opuliss fits in the practice.

What the research actually rewards

Start with the marks a breakout leaves behind, because they are the clearest case for the steady routine. A 2026 therapeutics review reports that "Up to 85% of patients with Fitzpatrick phototypes IV-VI develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following inflammatory acne lesions". 1 The hedge matters: up to, not always. The same review states the marks "can persist for months or even years", sometimes weighing more than the acne itself. 1

Prevention is where consistency earns its name. A systematic review of prevention studies concluded that "only sunscreen consistently prevented the incidence of PIH". 2 Its population needs saying plainly: 369 pooled cases, 95 percent of them following laser treatment and none following acne, so it speaks most directly to procedure aftercare. 2 Still, the direction is consistent across the literature. A clinical reference on melasma, a pigmentation condition most common at medium skin tones rather than the deepest, puts the same point in one line: "Clinical improvement is frequently transient in the absence of sustained photoprotection and maintenance therapy". 3 Results that are not maintained do not stay.

The habit is the hard part

The gap between what the evidence rewards and what actually happens is measured, not guessed. In a 2026 survey of people with skin of colour and acne-related dark marks, "Daily sunscreen use was inconsistent, with 39.2% applying occasionally (< 3 times/week) and only 33.3% applying daily". 4 Fewer than one in five recognised that sunscreen had any role in preventing the marks at all. 4

Why do routines break? In another survey of a largely skin of colour patient population, "Forgetting to apply sunscreen was the most frequently reported barrier among sunscreen users, followed by the perception that sunscreen was unnecessary because of spending most of the day indoors". 5 The other half of the answer is product experience. A 2026 photodermatology paper notes that "cosmetic unacceptability-including white cast, poor shade match, and texture incompatibility with acne-prone skin-significantly limits real-world adherence". 6 People forget, people doubt the indoor hours count, and people stop using products that look wrong on them. A routine survives when it is short, comfortable, and realistic about all three.

What Opuliss makes, and what it does not

The best evidenced daily step in that record is sunscreen, and Opuliss does not make one. That sentence stays in this piece because leaving it out would sell a tidier story than the evidence supports. What Opuliss offers is the practice around it: a short set of products a person can keep using, every ingredient named.

A practice, kept small

The routine that survives is the one with the fewest moving parts. Three roles, one product each, kept steady.

Build from there in the skincare collection, the foundation range, and Opuliss Men.

Carry the lesson

The Beauty Journal returns often to one inheritance: steady work, done well, without an audience. The research on pigmentation says the same thing in plainer clothes. Care is not a performance. It is a practice, and the practice is the point.
