A Sunday Reset That Feels Like Home

A Sunday reset is not a longer routine. It is the one hour a week you spend knowing your products instead of just using them. The most restorative thing on the shelf turns out to be information, because the research on products marketed for melanin rich skin and textured hair keeps finding the same gap between the label and the jar.

Why the reading matters

In 2018, a laboratory analysis of hair products used by Black women reported that "The hair products tested contained 45 endocrine disrupting or asthma-associated chemicals, including every targeted chemical class". ¹ The finding that matters most for a Sunday reader came next: "Targeted chemicals were generally not listed on the product label". ¹ That was 18 products tested in 2018, a measurement of contents rather than of harm, and formulations change. The lesson that survives those limits: the label is where trust starts, and it is not always where the truth lives.

Clean labelling did not close the gap. A 2026 analysis of 150 textured hair products carrying clean labels at one Los Angeles retailer found that "Seventy percent of products listed fragrance, an ingredient category of concern given limited ingredient transparency". ² Of the 62 products that appeared in an advocacy hazard database at all, more than 90 percent scored as moderate hazard, and both denominators belong in that sentence: 70 percent of 150, 90 percent of 62. ² A word on the front of a bottle is a marketing register, not a disclosure standard.

The reset, practised
