Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol with no structural resemblance to retinoids, yet it engages the same downstream retinoid pathway in skin cells. Chaudhuri and Bojanowski 2014 demonstrated, via comparative gene expression profiling in skin substitute models and human dermal fibroblasts, that bakuchiol modulates the same gene expression profile as retinol3. In a 12-week prospective, randomised, double-blind clinical trial, 0.5% bakuchiol twice daily and 0.5% retinol daily both significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and the appearance of hyperpigmentation with no statistical difference. Bakuchiol users reported less facial scaling and stinging. That evidence is specific to 0.5% bakuchiol versus 0.5% retinol1. Evening primrose oil delivers gamma-linolenic acid documented in dermatology reviews of dietary supplements. Topical evidence is mechanism-class plausibility2. Lyons 2020 showed bakuchiol significantly improved the appearance of trichloroacetic-acid-induced post-inflammatory pigmentation versus vehicle and untreated control4.
