One review, three readings

In 2025, a systematic review pooled every study it could find on preventing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in skin of colour. Its abstract reports: "All patients were of Asian ethnicity, and 42% were of FST III, 54% FST IV, and 4% FST V." ¹ Read quickly, that is a sentence about all 369 pooled cases.

The table underneath tells it more carefully. Ethnicity was recorded for 178 of the 369 cases, and skin type for 339, so the flat "all" rests on the subset where anyone wrote it down. ¹ One reading is quotable. The other is true at its stated size. The absence of the deepest skin type is the stronger fact precisely because it is a reported zero: of the 339 cases with a recorded type, not one was Fitzpatrick VI.

Then comes the detail that changes what the whole review can answer: "95% of the cases ( n = 352) were caused by laser therapy". ¹ Not one case followed acne. A number built on laser aftercare cannot simply be handed to someone asking about a breakout, and a careful reader is the only person who ever finds that out.

Why a beauty brand practises this

Because the alternative is quoting confidently from studies that were never about you. The detail work is the difference between borrowed authority and earned trust: read the table and not just the abstract, keep every percentage attached to its denominator, and let a hedge like up to survive into the sentence instead of quietly rounding it into a promise.
