Caffeine: What It Really Does for the Under-Eye Area
What caffeine does in eye care: an antioxidant studied for the look of a refreshed under-eye, what one 12-week eye cream study could and could not show, and the claims we do not make.
What does topical caffeine do for skin? Caffeine is an antioxidant that penetrates skin well, and it is studied in eye care for the appearance of the under-eye area, a de-puffed, more awake-looking finish. What it does not do, in claims we would make, is improve your circulation or firm your skin, and the evidence for caffeine on its own is limited. Here is the honest picture.
Caffeine is a genuinely interesting eye-care ingredient that is often sold on claims the evidence does not carry. At Opuliss, we keep it to its honest angle: the look of a refreshed under-eye.
What is caffeine, actually?
Caffeine is a methylxanthine, a small molecule that penetrates the skin barrier well. In cosmetics it is valued for two honest reasons: it is an antioxidant, and it has a vasoactive character that has made it a common choice in eye products aimed at the look of puffiness.
What does the research honestly show?
A cosmetic-science review describes caffeine as a skin-penetrating antioxidant with a vasoactive mechanism, which is the basis for its use in eye care.1 In a 12-week study, an eye cream containing caffeine improved the appearance of under-eye dark circles and puffiness.2
Two honest limits sit on that. The eye-cream study tested a multi-ingredient formula, so caffeine's individual contribution cannot be isolated, and the study had no placebo arm.2 Overall, the evidence for caffeine alone on under-eye puffiness is thin. So we say caffeine is studied for the look of a refreshed under-eye, and we do not overstate it.
What will we not claim?
You will see caffeine sold as a circulation booster and a firming serum. Improving circulation and firming are structure-function claims, and we do not make them. Caffeine is an antioxidant studied for the appearance of the under-eye area. It does not change your circulation, and it is not a firming treatment.
How does caffeine fit into your ritual?
Our Caffeine De-Puff Eye Booster is a lightweight 1 percent caffeine water-gel for the look of a refreshed, more awake under-eye. Pat a small amount gently around the eye area morning or evening, on its own or under your eye cream.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does caffeine reduce under-eye puffiness? +
We say it helps the look of puffiness, and we are honest that the evidence for caffeine alone is limited.2 It is a cosmetic, appearance-level benefit, not a medical treatment.
Does caffeine improve circulation or firm the skin? +
We do not make those claims. Improving circulation and firming are structure-function claims. Caffeine is an antioxidant studied for the appearance of the under-eye area.
How strong is the caffeine? +
Our booster is formulated with 1 percent caffeine. When you blend a booster into a cream, the final amount on skin is lower, so we keep our claims modest and appearance-level.
