Retinoids, and Why Opuliss Uses Plant-Based Alternatives
Discover why retinoids are the gold standard for anti-aging skincare. Learn how these Vitamin A derivatives work at the cellular level to reduce wrinkles, fade hyperpigmentation, treat acne, and transform skin texture with science-backed results.
Does Opuliss sell retinol? No. Opuliss Skin uses zero pure retinol. Retinoids carry the strongest evidence grade in cosmetic anti-ageing, and we say so plainly even though we do not sell them. Here is what retinoids do, what our plant-based alternatives can and cannot match, and where each claim honestly stands.
Retinoids are the most evidence-backed family in cosmetic anti-ageing and also among the most over-claimed. At Opuliss, we took a different route, and the honest thing is to explain the trade-off rather than pretend there is not one.
What Are Retinoids, Actually?
Retinoids are a family of vitamin A derivatives. They run from prescription strengths, which are regulated as medicines, down to cosmetic-grade retinol. The prescription end is medicine, and it is not something a cosmetics brand should discuss as if it were its own. The cosmetic end is what the skincare aisle sells.
What Does the Research Honestly Show?
A 2024 systematic review applied Oxford evidence grading to cosmetic anti-ageing ingredients. Retinol and vitamin C received a Grade A recommendation. Bakuchiol received a Grade C.1 We are not going to bury that, because it is the honest starting point for explaining our own choice.
Retinol also carries real drawbacks the grade does not capture. It can irritate, and it degrades on exposure to light, which is why it is generally kept to an evening step. Those are the reasons a gentler alternative is worth having at all.
Where Do Our Alternatives Genuinely Stand?
Bakuchiol is the best studied of them. In a randomized, double-blind, 12 week trial, 44 participants applied either 0.5 percent bakuchiol twice daily or 0.5 percent retinol once daily. Both significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation with no statistical difference between them, and the retinol group reported more facial skin scaling and stinging.2 That is one trial, at one strength, against cosmetic retinol and not against prescription strengths.
An important limit on how far we will carry that trial: our supplier has not disclosed the exact bakuchiol concentration in our own oil. So we present the trial as evidence for the ingredient, not as a result you should expect from our specific bottle. We would rather say that than quietly let a 0.5 percent trial stand in for an undisclosed formula.
The wider literature deserves the same honesty. A 2024 systematic review of 15 human bakuchiol trials found 12 were unblinded and open-label with no control group, 10 tested a combination formula rather than bakuchiol alone, and the authors concluded the trials lack methodologic rigor and that meta-analysis was not feasible.3 So: one good trial sitting inside a thin evidence base. Both things are true and you should hear both.
Our BioRetinol line uses Bidens pilosa extract, and its evidence is mechanism-level rather than clinical. In human dermal fibroblasts and skin fragments, a standardized supercritical CO2 extract modulated the retinoid and rexinoid receptors involved in retinol's activity, with the degree of receptor modulation reported as comparable to retinol.4 That is laboratory work in cells and tissue samples, not an outcome measured on people, and we do not present it as one. The study was also conducted by the ingredient supplier, which is worth knowing when you weigh it.
Retinol and bakuchiol, side by side:
| Retinol | Bakuchiol |
|---|---|
| Grade A recommendation in a 2024 systematic review that applied Oxford evidence grading | Grade C in the same review |
| In a randomized, double-blind 12 week trial, 0.5 percent retinol once daily significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation | 0.5 percent bakuchiol twice daily did the same, with no statistical difference between them |
| Can irritate, and the retinol group reported more facial skin scaling and stinging in that trial | Better tolerated in that trial |
| Degrades on exposure to light, so it is generally kept to an evening step | Stable in light, so it suits daytime or evening use |
What Will We Not Claim?
You will see retinol alternatives sold as natural retinol, as retinol equivalents, as more effective than retinol, as boosting collagen production, or as working at the cellular level to accelerate cell turnover. Those are either structure-function drug claims or comparative claims the evidence does not carry, and we make none of them. Comparable to cosmetic retinol in one 12 week trial is not the same as replacing retinoids, and we will not round it up.
How Do These Fit Into Your Ritual?
Our Bakuchiol Renewal Oil is built on the alternative with the strongest single trial behind the ingredient. Our BioRetinol Daily Cream is the gentler daily option built on Bidens pilosa. Unlike retinol, both are stable in light, so they suit daytime or evening use. Because Bidens is a member of the daisy (Asteraceae) family, patch test first if you have a known daisy or ragweed allergy. Introduce either one gradually, and pair with daily broad-spectrum sun protection as you would with any routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is bakuchiol just a natural form of retinol? +
No. Bakuchiol bears no structural resemblance to retinoids and is not converted into retinoic acid in the skin. It is a separate compound studied as an alternative, which is exactly why we call it an alternative and never a natural retinol.
Are retinol alternatives as effective as retinol? +
We will not make that claim. One randomized 12 week trial found bakuchiol comparable to 0.5 percent retinol on wrinkle appearance and pigmentation, with better tolerance,2 but the broader bakuchiol evidence base grades lower than retinol's1 and most of its trials lack a control group.3 If what you want is the most evidence-backed option available, that is retinol, and we are comfortable saying so even though we do not sell it.
Can I use these in the morning? +
Yes. Unlike retinol, which degrades in light, bakuchiol and BioRetinol are stable in light and suit daytime or evening use. We still recommend daily broad-spectrum sun protection, as we would with any routine.
Why does Opuliss not sell retinol at all? +
Our formulas are made to fixed supplier specifications, and none of them contains pure retinol. Rather than imply otherwise with retinol-adjacent language, we say plainly that what we sell are gentler alternatives, and we show where their evidence is strong and where it is thin.
